Month by Month Onesie Tutorial

Well there haven’t been a whole lot of crafty projects in my world this summer due to the fact that my hands have been full of the cutest baby in the world.  But I did do one.  I saw this project awhile ago at Joy is At Home.  And I vowed then that I would do it before the baby came.  Yeah, well that didn’t happen.  But luckily – it is so simple that you can do it in no time – even over a nap.  It was so easy that I was able to make another set for my girlfriend who also just had a baby too!  Here is what they look like – the rest of the post is how we got there!

So for starters – I used my Silhouette and their matte heat transfer material in Teal.  (This isn’t a Silhouette sponsored post – but I thought I would give you the details to be helpful and stuff!)  First, you have to come up with a design and then you have to flip it to be a mirror image so that it cuts out the correct way.  This is VERY important. 

Once you have it cut with your machine you need to get your onesie and your iron out. 

While your iron is preheating – peel up the edge of your pattern and start to pull the excess away so that you are only left with the actual pattern. 

Now because you have to be gentle and leave only the pattern behind it is very important that you make sure your pattern isn’t too intricate or you will risk pulling it off the heat transfer backing as well.  Trust me – just getting the inside of that “o” out was trouble enough.

Now – once you have the excess material pulled off you will notice that it is kinda sticky.  This will help you place the pattern and make sure that it doesn’t move while you are ironing.  To iron on – the instructions say to place a cloth over the transfer and press for 30 seconds.  I did that – but I noticed they didn’t stick on as sturdy as I would like.  Now Suzy from Joy at Home recommended the following and I agree – run the iron over the pattern again AFTER you pull the heat transfer backing off.   It gives it that last little seal to keep your pattern on.   When you are finished you will end up with something like this…

Isn’t it adorable?  We are taking a picture at each month to show off how the lil man is growing!  These make a wonderful keepsake and a great gift.  Oh and if you have any extra room around your pattern – don’t let that go to waste!  Come up with some cute sayings or graphics and make some additional onesies!  I love this “Rock Star” one that I made!
