So, I know you have had a burning question since last week. What is she going to do with the yard sale mirror??? Well I have decided after much debate that I liked the idea of doing a chalkboard best. I had just the place for it in the kitchen and thought it would be a fun place to put a menu or to do list!
So for starters - I decided to make the chalkboard part of the board out of cardboard. I know what you are thinking - your going to make a chalkboard out of cardboard? Yep - I sure am. And here is why - there was a perfectly sized piece of cardboard in the back of the frame of the yard sale mirror. No cutting, no measuring - it is already there. So I sprayed my lil piece of cardboard with two coats of chalkboard spray paint and then rubbed down the surface with chalk.

Its so thin! But it works - you can write on it, erase and then write again! Chalkboard in a can might be one of the coolest thing has ever been created.
So here is the finished product all hung up in our kitchen! I love it! That was our very healthy dinner! (With ice cream - of course! Gotta save my calories for something!)

Sigh - who knew I could love a piece of cardboard that much!

I don't like using spray much! I used the chalk board paint that comes in a can that you brush on--I like a bit more control and I don't like all the directions that spray flies!!! Anywho --glad you succeeded!
I finally made my first chalkboard a few months back. I found a large gold frame with a hideous rather scary looking picture in it for $5 at our local thrift, so I just spray painted the frame white and "chalkboarded" the ugly picture. Turned out fabulous! Now I'm even more obsessed with chalkboards.
Jess, I love it! Of course, I noticed the bird plates and am curious: did you make them? If so, what technique did you use?
The menu board is such a great idea! My daughter was a picky eater though, so she'd probably fret about what she was having for dinner all day!

I HAVE used cardboard for chalkboard! I used the little inserts that came in the mail package with my girls dance pictures to keep it stiffer. And it worked great because it had some texture to it! Great minds think alike :)
Ooh. What a great idea. It looks amazing. I'm sure no one walking into your kitchen would ever imagine it's humble beginnings. I will definitely have to try this.
I HAVE to get the spray! I only have the globby one you paint on with a brush and I think the spray does a better job!

Thanks for sharing. I just had the same dilemma (since I was going to use glass that came in the frame, but it broke. I'm glad you shared because I think I will use cardboard now! I assume it was the chipboard kind and not the corrugated cardboard.

Using a brush or roller, apply the chalkboard paint within the taped-off area. For best results, use a Benjamin Moore custom-blended nylon/polyester brush or short-nap roller.
